Lotus flowers and water lilies are revered the world over as symbols of the aspiring soul. These captivating photographs and fine art masterworks illustrate the seeker's path to purity and enlightenment. The roots of a lotus and a water lily are in the mud. Each stem grows upward through the murky water, reaching for the light of the sun, until at last the fragrant flower opens above the water to bask in the sunlight. Together they symbolize the progress of the soul from the primeval mud of materialism, through the waters of experience, and into the bright sunshine of enlightenment. The Lotus Blossoms & Water Lilies 2008 wall calendar presents twelve lush images of these spiritual icons. Each image is paired with an inspiring quote from the world's great teachers, mystics and poets.

ISBN: 1552973107

Price: $13.99

Insects are everywhere we look and everywhere we cannot see. They are ugly to some and beautiful to others but all share the same defining feature: six legs. Insects are the most diverse group of animals on Earth, inhabiting nearly every ecosystem on the planet. Scientists know of a million species and estimate that millions more are yet unknown. In Insects 2008, world-renowned nature photographers create a year-long gallery of insects as rarely seen. Insects both common and uncommon are shown in their natural habitats, from the deepest rain forests to temperate woodlands. Informative captions shed further light on the secretive and very busy lives of insects.

Nice size quality paper, typical uninspired photos (2008-12-01)

I liked the large size of the calendar and the nice paper quality.

The world is filled with amazing, unbelievable insects. So I thought a calendar would be great to help me see these rarely seen creatures. I enjoyed this calendar but was disappointed at 6 "wasted" pages. I could have been introduced to 12 rare, colorful, and exquisite insects, but at least half of the photos were used on typical, common, or inappropriate insects.

By inappropriate, I mean butterflies (and their larva, caterpillars) and dragonflies. There are many butterfly and dragonfly calendars available already. I picked an "Insect" calendar and not a butterfly calendar to get other kinds of insects.

Perhaps I would not be nitpicking this, except that the butterfly was a common sulphur, and the dragonfly was a common skimmer. Neither photo was an extreme close-up which would have made them more interesting, and the dragonfly photo was not centered with the end of the tail cut off.

The three colorful caterpillars were great quality photos, but in an insect calendar, why waste three pages on caterpillars when there are hundreds of thousands of varieties of insects to choose from? I also think they should have been in a butterfly calendar.

Bumblebees are fascinating, but they are also very common. The bumblebee is in flight which I admit takes amazing skill and special equipment to photograph, but the bumblebee in the photo is small, not even taking up a quarter of the page-the editor should have zoomed in on it.

The Mint Leaf Beetle was a good choice, with its shimmering metallic color, but again, the editor did not zoom in and crop enough, the beetle does not even take up a quarter of the picture, also, its face is in shadows. A quick search using google images shows several much more detailed photos of mint beetles.

WHAT I LOVED: The Lantern Bug, Stink Bug, and Giraffe-necked Weevil. These were unexpected, and are rarely seen, and they are exquisite insects. The photos are crisp, clear, and colorful close-ups. I wish all of the photos were like these.

I ALSO LIKED: the Chestnut Weevil and Mediterranean Katydid--though these insects are not rare, and in fact you can pretty easily find them or a close relative with a little searching, these photos were extreme close ups of their faces, clear, colorful, and even a little humorous (with the weevil's long proboscis and the katydid's cocked antenna.) I found these photos enjoyable.

I would buy this calendar again, but mainly because there is no competition. I enjoyed having an insect calendar-Seeing the beauty in the tiny world of insects reminds me daily to notice small bits of beauty that exist in every corner of God's creation. I hope to find another insect calendar for next year.

Strongly influenced by Shinto and Buddhism, the Japanese style of landscaping is particularly conducive to restoring an inner calm. Requiring an artful blend of imagination, skill and patience, the Japanese garden is an extension of the self. By adapting the harmonies of natural design to our own landscape, we heighten our understanding of the world around us and within us. The Gardens of the Spirit 2008 wall calendar features the exquisite images of professional garden photographer Allan Mandell. Paired with Maggie Oster's contemplative text, this collection of images brings the experience of Japanese gardening to all who long to create a peaceful oasis in the midst of a challenging world. Sample Caption: "Life's journey beckons us into the unknown. We cannot see the end, only the fewest steps before us. Even when we think we know what those steps will be, large or small, smooth or rough, we cannot fully know what each one will be like until we are there, only then if we allow ourselves to be totally in the moment, open to all the senses, completely aware. If we are distracted by what may be up ahead, where we've been before, by side paths, or fixed plans or concepts, then we become out of balance..."

Look up from your desk and calm your spirit (2007-01-19)

This calendar is a beautiful way to chart the passing of a year. The photographs are simple but profoundly beautiful, and can be kept and used in other ways after the year is over. The space for writing in events etc. is generous, and even ordering from the UK the calendar is no more expensive than those available here.

For the Zen-minded viewer (2007-01-11)

This calender shows beautiful photos of Asian-type landscapes and some thoughtful proverbs for the calm and zen-oriented mind.
