Ugly, Outdated, Save your money! (2008-07-28)

I had the SnB page a day calendar last year, and I was disappointed that it only had patterns on Fridays, and the rest of the week was dedicated to knitting trivia and such, so this year I asked for the Knitting pattern a day calendar, in the hopes that I could really beef up my pattern collection.

Ugh, is just about all I have to say. There are days that I am embarrassed to have this calendar sitting on my desk at work, the patterns are so hideous. I just threw away a scarf pattern- knit entirely in garter stitch, with weird white "finger knit" dangly things hanging off it. Really the ugliest scarf I've ever seen.

Save your money, click on ravelry.com once a day for a new pattern. These are tired!!

Very Disappointing when compared to prior years... (2008-03-17)

A Calendar that markets itself as a "pattern-a-day" should be just that. In the past years, I've lived with having Saturday and Sunday combined - but this year's calendar often (more often than not?) spans several days. Last year I probably saved about 5 patterns a month for another look-through at the end of the year. So far this year (and it is now mid-March) I've only saved 4 patterns total.

Next year, can we please have one pattern each day (and yes, I'll give you a Sat/Sun combo)????

Use your money to buy yarn instead (2008-02-05)

How many mp3 player covers do we need? Are we too stupid to figure out how to make them without a written pattern? Patterns are far too simple and simular patterns can be found free on the internet. What a total waste of money. Next year I'll just use the money to add to my yarn stash.

Nice idea, poorly thought out.... (2008-02-02)

The patterns in here are ok, nothing fantastic. The one thing that annoys me is that they take one pattern, and use it for both Saturday and Sunday, instead of using the two part patterns for the weekends. And there are plenty of two parters. I probably wouldn't buy this next year. I might get the stitch n bitch one instead.

Live to Knit (2008-02-02)

This calendar is well worth your money for you or your favorite knitter. Almost every day has a new pattern covering a wide range of interests. I am making the scrubbie cloth right now -- it's fun! What is bad about this calendar is at the end of the year, I have to keep it for all the cute projects.

Guiness for a 5 year old (2008-03-04)

I had bought one of these calendars for my son who is 10 yrs old. We were enjoying doing it every day. We then got word of a 5yr. old boy with severe cancer that belonged to a work associate of my husband. His goal was to be in the Guiness Book of World Records for the most paper airplanes received. Last I heard they had 95,000 planes. You helped us help that little boy! Thanks

Great Product! (2008-01-22)

Overall great product. Most of the planes fly pretty well if you can figure out how to adjust the wings. Some are definitely easier than others. More of a "big-kid" toy as some of the planes are fairly difficult to make. Great for the office desk.

Great! (2008-01-18)

It was delivered quickly, and was in perfect condition. The price was a little high (especially with shipping and handling), but I guess you have to pay for convenience. Overall, good product.

an office motivator, no matter how small (2008-01-18)

This gift is perfect for my wife's office, which includes military and non-military employees. These are just fun to have, and they can be a good ice breaker, shout out, gift, or motivator to others around her because they are intricate and so well designed. These are not your average paper airplanes.

Possibly 365 planes who don't fly too well (2008-01-16)

The concept is cool, and the planes easy to make (required tool: scissors) - but very hard to glide/fly.

Our seven year old has considerable experience in making paper planes and miniature planes (we recommend the Klutz book), and has dubbed this product his "Tiny plane a day who doesn't fly" calendar. I should add that doesn't prevent him from continuing to build and test the planes, but proper flight should be an expected, not an optional benefit.

Not sure we will buy this again - certainly not at full price.

Totally disappointed, if you love someone, don't give as a gift (2009-11-20)

I was severely disappointed in this calendar.

A pattern a day, implies just that, 365 patterns.

Instead there were around 100 if memory serves me right.

It had three days for one pattern as simple as a bottle holder.

Saturdays and Sundays shared the same pattern, both years. So you can automatically subtract 52 from the 365 you would be expecting. 2008 and 2009. I belong to many crochet groups and many others were just giving these worthless pieces of paper away.

The patterns were mostly freebies found on the internet, and some were just a wast of precious trees.

I saw the invitation to have a pattern printed in one of these calendars. The maker/designer receives nothing.

The calendar company on the other hand receives some pretty hefty bucks for the calendar, if being sold at retail cost. The quality is less than fair, and better than worthless.

The 2009 calendar was a bigger disappointment than the 2008 one was. One simple pattern took five days for the pattern of those days, yet the item could take less than ten hours to crochet, for a mediocre crocheter.

I may purchase the 2010 calendar, but after seeing the way they ask for patterns and do not pay the makers/designers for the 2011 calendar, it makes me think that my money will be wasted buying that one.

Good designers can get at least two dollars, per sale, or more for a good pattern if sold online. And they retain the copyrights. If it is sent to this company, the company keeps all copy rights. Except for the freebies they get from the yarn companies, which are already online anyhow.

My advice, keep your money, buy a book of patterns or afghans of the year instead, they are much nicer, can cost less and you know are better designs.

This is an awesome idea, and it sounds like the company is taking this downhill and getting less taste and good patterns, because they do not want to pay for the patters, they make us pay for.

I can Download 365 free patterns in about three days. many, many, many are much nicer that the ones in either calendar that I had bought.

Please, please, do not make this a gift, unless that person knows what they are getting ahead of time. I would be embarrassed to give a gift of such low quality. I would rather make a nice item or buy some vintage books, or get a new book on Amazon for the cost of the calendar, and give that to my friends.

One commenter said a lot were poor quality photos, besides the ones taken from the yarn company web sites, this is true. There seemed to be no quality control, nor proof reading to the patterns.

I would hope that less people buy these calendars, until the company realizes crocheters are not so stupid after all.

I have just looked up the 2010 calendar, and it has a total of 110 patterns.

These are made with thin, easy to tear paper. I can truthfully say very little good about these pattern a day (cough, cough) calendars.

Unless you have the money to waste, I would recommend buying another means of patterns. For the cost of these calendars, you can find many good quality pattern books, that have the same variety of items, and the quality of patterns are better yet.

disappointed (2008-09-30)

I was excited at the prospect of having a great collection of misc. patterns. So far, I've tried two. Both had errors -- major ones. Weren't these patterns tested? "Example: Row1: Ch 4,join last ch to first ch with a slip stitch. Row2: Ch 1, sc in each of the 9 sts in the loop formed." Also, usually increasing rows give the number of stitches in parenthesis at the end of the row -- not this one!
This product needs a place where errata can be published with fixes to the patterns.

love it (2008-02-27)

I love this calendar so much that i had to order a new one when i lost some of my pages of the old one. i would recommend this calendar. i never would have thought that i could make some of these items without this calendar. buy it and enjoy it.

Crochet Pattern a Day:2008 Day to Day Calendar (2008-01-21)

I have been buying this calendar for the past three years, and it is very nice and helpful with patterns.I already knew the product. I find that the previews ones had more useful patterns and they are running out of ideas. I am not sure I would buy it next year.

cool patterns (2008-01-13)

I have gotten this calender for the last few years. I miss Annie Modesitt as the editor, but this year's calender is still good. The patterns range from the silly (like "Jellyfish Scrubby" and "Crocheted Fortune Cookie")to the beautiful (like "Long and Lacey Scarf" and "Mohair Triangular Shawl"). There are also several good patterns you can use for charity crocheting--hats that that would make a great chemo caps (especially "Hip Cap" and "Child's Ladybug Hat & Purse") and many blankets and scarves.
As other reviewers have noted, there are many patterns from yarn companies--more and more each year, it seems. However, most contributions are from individuals--many of whom have websites you can check out for more great patterns.
The biggest complaint I have always had for this calender is that the yarns listed for each pattern are usually name brands, rather than the size/gauge (bulky, worsted, dk, or whatever) of the yarn. This makes it a pain to substitute yarn--I often have to look the listed yarn up on-line to find what type it is. On the whole, though, I'm glad I got this calender and will look for it next year, as well.

Not as wonderful as I'd hoped (2008-09-11)

The thought of having a cross stitch pattern for each day really excited me. I love cross stitching, and I love acquiring new patterns. Unfortunately, many of these designs are just not pretty or enjoyable. I don't see myself ever stitching even half of them. Good idea, not the greatest execution.

Love it!!! (2008-02-19)

Easy Cross-Stitch Pattern-a-Day: 2008 Day-to-Day Calendar

I love this calendar. The patterns take a little more than a day to do but it has some really cute patterns.

Cross-Stitch Calendar (2007-10-30)

The product come nicely packed in a standard Amazon packaging.
The box which holds the Cross-Stitch calendar can be folded as a display stand for the card calendar.
My girlfriend is loving this calendar.

Pretty to look at, not practical to do (2007-09-22)

For the past several years I've enjoyed my daily "easy" Cross-Stitch Pattern-a-Day calendars, but I've never done a single pattern.

why?

For one thing, they are extremely difficult to do. Computer generated, a typical design of 5" x 5" may require as many as 36 colors. The patterns are very hard to read - they are very small for the intricate detail they require. The one time I did an element from one of the designs, I took the pattern to a Kinko's and blew it up. Even a small teddy bear (2" x 2") that I loved took me a long time to do and over 12 different colors.

I still buy the calendars every year, though. I like the look of the designs and find the calendar an attractive addition to my desk.

bead a day calendar (2008-02-15)

This is the third year I have purchased this calendar. Everyday there is a new project, some for beginners, and some for advanced bead workers.
I would give this as a gift to any bead lover.

It's only February 8th and I hate this calendar! (2008-02-09)

I was a disappointed with this calendar. I was expecting a 365 page a day thing with small individual daily projects. However, most of them are multi step projects that are several pages over several days. So far all I've seen are advanced crocheting and stitching projects, neither of which I like to do. Even if I did like those types of projects, the designs are hideously ugly and I would never make them. Another thing I don't like about this calendar is it's not bound like a regular calendar where you tear a page off. Instead all the pages are loose and fit inside a holder that the box turns into. The whole design is weird and I can't quite figure out how to keep the pages in there and organized properly.

It's only the beginning of February and I hate this calendar already!

It's a bead WEAVING calendar (2008-01-19)

I bought this calendar because I'm always on the lookout for new jewelry project ideas. So far, I'm disappointed. Don't be fooled by the pictures on the box. Those projects are few and far between; however, if you're a beadweaver, you're going to love this calendar. This is mostly a beadweaving calendar with a few other bead-jewelry projects interspersed among the peyote stitch, brick stitch, and similar items. I've peeked at pages that are still weeks ahead, and beadweaving is not just a January theme.

The title of the calendar is misleading...This is actually approximately three or four projects a week, with the instructions for each spread out over multiple days. This includes a couple of weeks devoted to foundation skills, also with the instructions spread out over several days. Since the foundation skills are already included on cards, I don't see the point of also having them repeated (the identical pages) within the calendar. I wish these calendar pages had been used for actual projects...Maybe projects that don't involve sewing seed beads into painful patterns.

If you love to sew your jewelry projects with a needle and lots of teeny-tiny beads, this is the calendar for you.

Bead-a-Day Calendar (2007-11-03)

Beading Bead-a-Day: 2008 Day-to-Day Calendar

I received the 2007 version as a Christmas gift and was hooked from the beginning. You get 365 days of instructions, eye candy and wonderful projects. It's not just beading, there's wireworking, knitting and crocheting, applique, and even bead making. Something for everyone.

For your favorite beader - this is a must give gift!

Disappointing (2007-10-28)

Coming up with 365 beading ideas must be hard, but I was quite disappointed by some of the projects in the 2007 calendar (a peyote weave motorbike?!). The author's website is referenced a lot but on visiting it I found there wasn't much there. The calendar is a great idea - I hope it continues to improve.

A gem for the origami lover (2008-03-07)

This is a fantastic gift for someone who likes origami -- even if they are not serious about doing each day's project, there is always a new one! I'm guessing they get harder as the year goes on, but from what I saw, good directions and pretty fun stuff to make.

Addictive fun (2008-01-31)

I look forward to folding a new model each morning before I start my day of work. This makes a great desk calendar. The molds are fun to fold. Some are very easy and other take a little more patients. Overall, this should be a lot of fun for almost anyone.

Fun for all ages (2008-01-10)

A great little calendar. A wonderful gift! Fun for parents and kids - something for them to do together! Paper folding - Origami - is not only cool but a sly way to teach children about shapes. Anyone can do it!

The most fun you can stuff in a little box (2008-01-01)

Love this calendar! I gave it to several of my relatives as stocking stuffers this Christmas. I've been buying it for the past several years. The models are fun and easy to follow--with a few more difficult ones thrown in so those advanced folders don't get bored (and it challenges the rest of us to step up). The fun facts are sometimes educational, sometimes funny and sometimes downright clever. It's a great thing for your desk at work or to give as a gift. If you are considering it, I'd say BUY IT! Its crafting in a box. Everything you need is right there--directions, paper and you. Plus, Origami is totally addictive and in the end, simply good clean fun.

Love these (2009-08-24)

I've bought many of these calendars for my daughters and friends. They are all a lot of fun. Will be buying more of the different kinds and for many years hopefully.

Mom loves it (2008-12-10)

I purchased this as a gift for my mother. She loves it. It has a page per day for each day of the year. There are dozens of themes with several pages coordinating on the theme. Many are seasonal, others topical (such as fish, birthday, birds, flowers, etc. The pages can be used for journaling, matting pictures, etc. We have been purchasing them for several years.

Tons of Fun!! (2007-12-31)

Background frames and papers for behind photos make for fast scrapping, but the fun dosn't stop there, with all over prints on some the pages can be used for cardmaking, covering small notebooks or boxes. And with the pages coming in sets that match the possibilities become endless! A new page every day!! Tons of cut outs in the centers of the frames too, this is a fun set that will keep you crafting all year and looking forward to the next day!

Kirigami 2009 calendar (2009-01-13)

I agree with previous reviewers. I am thoroughly enjoying the calendar. It provides a quiet moment where I am removed from daily cares. And, I have a cutout to share, hang, or otherwise enjoy.

Great Fun, easy for kids (2008-02-10)

I loved this product and I'm a senior. Great fun for kids with very easy to follow instructions.

Addiction! (2008-01-31)

I am a teacher who got this for the kids . . . they haven't tried one yet because I am having wwwaaayy to much fun! I just wish there was a Kirigami kit (craft knife, tweezer, fancy edge scissors, extra sharp scissors, hole punch, cutting board) that was all together.

Simple and Fun! (2008-01-11)

I spent a year working in China in 2003. I loved seeing the intricate paper cuts but I never gave it a thought that it was something I could ever attempt to do myself.
When I saw this calendar I bought it on a whim. I have completed the first 10 projects and have been very pleased so far. The paper from the previous day becomes the material for cutting. There are several tabbed "reference sheets" that show how to do special folds in order to arrange the paper to get the best cut designs. These are easy to follow and not intimidating at all. So far all of the projects I have done involve scissors only, but eventually they do progress to needing a craft knife or x-acto knife, and some projects require glue, tape, a hole punch, or craft scissors with special scalloped edges.
This is my first experience of actually doing Kirigami, and I don't feel like I am in over my head.
I recommend this for other beginners as well!

What fun this is! (2007-09-11)

Although this is a calendar for 2008, I couldn't wait to try some of the patterns, so I copied the pattern I wanted to try on the copy machine, purchased some regular origami paper, and tried it out. The instructions are excellent! The patterns are great! I'd recommend this to everyone.

Poor value (2008-01-30)

It's not a fold-a-day. It's a fold-a-weekday (weekends off) so don't expect 365 models! The models that are included vary in quality from good to extremely poor, with the poorer ones dominating. Perhaps the easiest explanation is that cutting and glueing are included in the calendar, presumably to simplify the models, but pure origami forbids this. Anything cut or glued rates poor in my book. If I wanted kirigami then I would have bought the kirigami calendar instead.

Not a good calendar (2007-12-08)

This calendar is really uninspired. The choice of models are really limited and the paper feels cheap. The Origami Page-a-Day Calendar by Margaret Van Sicklen is much better. The models are fun & different & come from the top names in the origami world. Plus the paper is really fun! Great colors & styles. I was really happy when I bought this one instead.

Fun concept, mediocre execution (2007-11-05)

I've always considered myself an origami dunce. I found all of the foldings I've tried so far from this calendar have been pretty easy. I'm not sure about the quality of the paper used for the foldings, as it can easily tear and the ink gets all over my fingertips. I just made a star and now my fingers are blue. Also, if you want to save the directions for certain foldings you have to unfold something else you've made. I've worked around this by only folding the designs that interested me, however, that kind of defeats the purpose of the one-a-day idea.

This wouldn't work as a scheduling calendar, as there is little to no space to write things.

Few new models (2007-10-24)

I've bought this calendar each year for the last three years. It's a good calendar, but its biggest fault is that each year adds very few new models. Also, some of the "models" are just basic folds (eg bird base, frog base) already documented in the tabs, or just suggestions for projects.
In short, if you have the 2007 calendar, the 2008 calendar will have little new to justify the cost...

For beginners only (2007-10-03)

Although this Calendar leads one to believe it is for beginners and intermediate by stating the models start simple and get harder, it is not. Even the most difficult model in this calendar provides no real challenge to the intermediate level. Any beginner who has intelligence and has taken the time to review the base fold and symbol guide could do any of these with ease. It is fantastic if you've never folded before, are a young child, or looking for something without challenge, but if you've folded before, and want a challenge, go somewhere else.
