The PMS Murder

Author: Laura Levine
Publisher: Kensington Publishing Corp
Publication date: 2007-03-27
ISBN:
Pages: 256
Rating:
Price: $5.59

On the frontlines of the battle of the bulge, otherwise known as trying on bathing suits in the communal dressing room at Loehmann-s, freelance writer Jaine Austen makes a new friend-a wannabe actress named Pam-and gets a new job: sprucing up Pam-s bare-bones resume. Their feeling of connection is mutual, so Pam invites Jaine to join The PMS Club-a women-s support group that meets once a week over guacamole and margaritas.

But joining the club proves to be more a curse than a blessing for Jaine. Though she is warned that Rochelle, the hostess, makes a guacamole to die for, Jaine never takes the warning literally. Until another PMS member, Marybeth, drops dead over a mouthful of the green stuff after confessing she is having an affair with Rochelle-s husband.

While Rochelle and her husband are the obvious suspects, everyone at that night-s meeting is under suspicion, including Jaine. So, instead of dishing dirt with The PMS Club, Jaine has to dig up dirt on the surviving members. And soon it becomes clear: someone in this club thinks getting away with murder should be a privilege of membership...

So funny! (2010-03-16)

I love Jaine Austen and her cat. She's a mellowed out version of Stephanie Plum but still has the same wit and charm. I've noticed that the author always thanks Joanne Fluke for all her help. I'm not sure why because Laura Levine is way funnier and a much better writer than Joanne. I'm waiting by my mailbox for her next book!

An interesting way to show character (2009-06-23)

I liked this book. It kept jumping suspects, which I did figure out right before Jane said why the person should be a suspect. Of course it was just the gut feeling of suspicion. But it was fun.
The Kindle version is written pretty well. I didn't find too many errors in the typing, unlike some other books I've purchased. There is also a table of contents, so if you want to make a note for each chapter about the main idea, go for it.
This entire series is very good. I really like the way Ms. Levine writes the main character. You can't go wrong with a "Jaine Austen" gal, who happens to be a writer. But it's more than that. Yes, she does write the story the way a normal author does. But there's times when Jaine is 'talking' to the reader, kind of like Ferris Bueller did in the movie. They way she lies about her food problems is hilarious. And don't get me started on the cat issue!
Ms. Levine does a very good job bringing her main character to life, so that the reader can believe, get lost in, even interact with Jaine. I think this series is unique because of the main character actions that show up, and anyone who likes a cozy should give this a try.

Murder in a women's support group (2008-08-18)

Jaine Austen, copywriter and part-time investigator, is out shopping. She meets Pam who invites her to join the PMS Club, a women's support group. They get together once a month and drink margaritas, eat guacamole and complain about life. Jaine goes and has a great time.

Marybeth who is annoying and overly perky drops dead at the meeting from a guacamole laced with peanut oil--she was allergic to peanuts. Since most of the members are reach, they were in the headlines. Jaine isn't too happy being a public murder suspect. It isn't helping her land a good paying job. So she begins investigating and finds that everyone in the club had a reason to kill Marybeth.

Jaine's put her cat on a diet, but he seems to be getting fatter. She teaches a memoir writing class at a local retirement home. A very sexy female senior citizen has joined the class and caught the attention of a lonely man in the group. Jaine's kind of happy as he's leaving her alone. But the rest of the women in the group are not happy. And Jaine's dad is convinced his new neighbor is a wanted professional assassin.

Can Jaine find the killer? Will the rest of her life calm down any time soon? Can she find a job?

This series is such a fun series to read. The e-mails from Jaine's parents are always very entertaining. The PMS Club is a great group of women and yet do they have secrets? There are so many suspects that it kept me guessing right up to the end who the killer was.

I highly recommend this book and this great cozy mystery series.

What a Hoot! (2008-03-26)

This is the first book in the Jaine Austen series I have read. I did read the Candy Cane Murder short story collection and her short story.

Laura Levine's writing is very funny and her characters are quite believable. I enjoyed reading about the seniors at the senior center. That was very believable. Anyone who has had a friend or a loved one living in a senior home has probably heard similar tales.

I imagined Andrew Ferguson as looking like the sensible bank employee in the Bank of Scotland commercials. Prozac the cat is the typical spoiled feline.

I liked how she planted little clues to let you believe one character had done it. The actual killer was a total surprise.

I think I will read more in this series. It was fairly entertaining and occasionally extremely funny.

Fair to Middlin' (2008-03-10)

I basically enjoy this easy-to-read, not-too-tortuous mystery series but enough is enough! Please, Ms. Levine, cats lick themselves in places other than their "privates" and have many other amusing traits that could be descriptively used in place of this particular obsession. I also do not care for the self-promotion of Ms. Levine's other titles in this series scattered throughout the writing. It is extremely distracting to the storyline. If one is interested in knowing what else the author has written they can look at the front pages of the book or come to Amazon.com for this information - they do not have to have it thrown in their faces.

Criticism aside, I actually liked the plot of this book better than the last couple of books in the series. There seemed to be more character development than usual and the assortment of suspects was neither too many nor too few. Also thought the incident regarding the open window could've been worked in more subtly than it was, and, as others have mentioned, it did end a bit abruptly although all loose ends were tidied up nicely.

Right Book At The Right Time! (2009-03-20)

I stumbled upon this book by accident and am I ever glad that I did! I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia after a hip fracture and have been researching all the osteoporosis meds available ... and coming away horrified at their side effects. I was just about to take my chances with a "do nothing" form of treatment when I found this book. I am SO relieved and excited to find the really good information contained in this book on this particular subject and all the alternatives that are mentioned. I have two other books by James F. Balch and they are well worn from use. This one is definitely joining the others as a must have in my home library. After researching my own medical conditions, I looked up those of a few other family members ... found just as much information available ... and was able to share it with them. Do not hesitate to purchase this book ... it is a great tool ... especially for those of us in the Second Act (50 years and older!) that are finding themselves being diagnosed with various medical conditions after living very healthy lives. There are a lot of "age related" things that we are faced with every day and this book gives us a breath of fresh air from the usual prescription meds our MDs are so quick to put us all on!

Great resource book (2008-12-22)

Good easy to read in categories that make sense. Able to browse in minutes.

Guides you through the maze of supplement bottles (2008-11-16)

I am open to supplements, but not ready to throw out traditional medicine just yet. And I'm overwhelmed by the 50-foot aisle of supplements at my grocery store. I see 37 different kinds of calcium alone and honestly, I give up. What's safe to take? Which manufacturers are trustworthy? Who knows?

Well, this book guides you through natural supplements that can improve or heal many conditions (big ones like high cholesterol, everyday ones like eczema or even anxiety). It discusses the studies - serious, peer-reviewed studies - proving the value of these supplements. It even tells you how your prescription medications may be working, and how supplements can assist or replace them. For some things, I've decided a supplement that can help me, and felt like I knew which bottle of pills was worth my money. For other things, I've come away understanding why my prescription drugs work. With the price of vitamins and supplements these days, avoiding just one wasted purchase would probably cover the cost of this book.

(I work for the publisher, and the editor gave me a copy of this book.)

family remedy (2008-10-06)

all families should have this book and other from the Balch family. You always find a good tip fr any kind of health disorder, sickness etc.
Thank you Dr Balch and Young Dr Balch.

Doesn't Follow His OWN Advice! (2008-09-27)

Dr. Balch, the main author, missed a great opportunity to write an exceptional book that could help tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people live a healthier, happier and more rewarding life.

The fact that he often leaves out his own advice given to readers of his newsletter is proof of this.

The best example is the section regarding cholesterol reduction / cardiovascular health.

He offers limited information on natural alternatives to prescription cholesterol-lowering drugs.

He COMPLETELY left out perhaps the best natural alternative of all - Pantethine (a special form of vitamin B5 known as Pantothenic Acid).

A while back, he talked about Pantethine in his newsletter, and how great and safe it is for lowering cholesterol / triglycerides.

Yet in his book, this information is NOWHERE to be found!!

I also found much information about newer, scientifically-advanced supplements was completely missing as well.

As someone who has been involved in the nutritional supplement industry for 15 years, I am greatly disturbed by how incomplete this "up-to-date" book is.

There are books published 10 years ago that are better than this "latest" work by Dr. Balch.

Instead of wasting your $$$ on this book, I highly recommend "Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution" (Nature's Answer to Drugs) by Dr. Robert C. Atkins (available here on Amazon, and in Barnes & Noble stores)

The Hormonally Vulnerable Woman: Relief at last for PMS, mood swings, fatigue, hair loss, adult acne, unwanted hair, female pain, migraine, weight gain, ... all the problems of perimenopause

Author: Geoffrey Redmond
Publisher: William Morrow
Publication date: 2005-09-01
ISBN: 0060825537
Pages: 480
Rating:
Price: $25.95

According to Geoffrey Redmond, M.D., a majority of the 42 million American women between the ages of thirty-five and fifty-five suffer from vulnerability to their own hormones. Appearance, emotions -- and even sex drive -- may be affected. Symptoms include thinning hair, persistent acne, mood swings, low energy, loss of pleasure in sex, weight gain, irregular periods, and pain. While the media has emphasized the problems of menopause, Dr. Redmond explains that all too many women experience hormonal miseries even in their thirties. Lab tests are often normal because the problem is not the hormones themselves but how a woman's body reacts to them. Healthy, active women suddenly find that once quiescent hormones have taken over control of their lives. Because their problems are often dismissed as trivial, women who are hormonally vulnerable are frequently thwarted in their quest for help. Too often they are brushed off with remarks such as, "Your tests are normal; there's nothing wrong with you." This is tragic because, as Dr. Redmond demonstrates, hormonal balance can nearly always be restored with the treatments he details, which include individualized use of prescription medications, herbal supplements, lifestyle changes, and even spiritual practices. Many women have heard that testosterone can help sex drive, but most have not been warned about the damage that careless testosterone therapy can cause on skin and hair.

In this book, Dr. Redmond, an internationally recognized authority on testosterone in women, explains the only safe ways to use testosterone. With informative sidebars, quizzes, and personal stories of women who have overcome hormone vulnerability, this helpful book will empower you to find treatments for your hormone problems that are tailored to fit your own body, biochemistry, symptoms, and lifestyle.

So impressed, I am a patient of the doctor now. (2010-05-14)

This man knows what he is talking about. I suffered with cystic acne and other miserable things from the age of 15 until February 2009 (age 31) when I became a patient of the author. The acne is gone, my hair is under control and I look better than ever, which makes me feel better than ever.

If you struggle with hormonal issues, find that your doctor can't help...get this book. You don't have to see Dr. Redmond to be able to take advantage of the knowledge in the book. You just need a good doctor willing to work with you and follow the recommendations within. That may be hard to find...I went to the source for my issues.

Read it!! (2008-11-20)

I am so happy that I purchased this book! I recommend it to all women that want to know what is going on with their bodies as they age and approach changes. Living with discomfort because you are aging does NOT have to be. This book helps you identify problems and ways to solve them with your own physician. It actually helps you improve your quality of life because the information gives you a plan. It gives medical evidence as well as real life examples of women Dr. Redmond has treated. You will not be disappointed.

Finally, some hope and answers !!!!!!!! (2007-09-08)

I am 37 and am loosing my hair, The information in this book has made me aware of all the reasons women can loose their hair. Many of the reason have the same symptoms. Which at first is frustrating until you realize more reasons means more possibilities to get it back even if only part of the hair. If you are considering hair transplants read this first, please.
I read other parts of the book that would be relevant to some friends this book is a great one, I have 3 more books about hair loss one is pretty good but abit out dated, the other is OK , and the other I will use to start a fire.

a must-have (2007-05-18)

This book is a must-have for every woman and teenage girl. Provides a wealth of info about female hormones & physiology in an easy-to-read format. Dr. Redmond is a leader in his field, and his depth of knowledge and compassion emerge effortlessly from the text.

I lived this book (2007-04-05)

If you are a woman suffering with unexplained hair loss on your head, hair growth where you don't want it, irritability, constant fatigue, dry skin or other skin problems and you are starting to feel generally more like a man than the beautiful woman you used to be, this book is for you. There ARE medications that can help you although most doctors will ignore and dismiss you. I went to see Dr. Redmond and he was able to help me, it was worth the trip into NYC and every penny. I feel like myself again and that is a miracle.

great (2010-02-20)

this is a fun book about a king who likes taking a bath. the story is short and fun to read, but it's the illustrations that make this book noteworthy. they are lush and expressive and whimsical and the attention paid to detail is wonderful. the story is simple and if it was illustrated in another style would be like the endless board books simplistically introducing life skills to toddlers. however, this style makes this story an adventure. the pictures perfectly punctuate the prose in the most flattering way.

the story is about a page who asks the court to get the king out of the bathtub and several people try different things to get him out. a knight tells him there's a battle out side, the queen tells him it's time for lunch, a duke tells him they should go fishing, the enitre court tells him to dance at a masquerade, but instead of leaving the tub he makes the person join him in the tub to do whatever they suggest to him! at the end when everyone is at wits end the page pulls the plug and the king finally gets out.

a fun book to read with illustrations that will get their imaginations working. the award on the cover is very much understandable.

Get the book with the CD if your kid(s) like music (2010-01-13)

My son is 2 1/2 years old and he loves music. When we got the King Bidgood's in the Bathtub... with the CD, he asked to listen to this 2-3 times a day. After a week, he start to remember the lines from the book. Great CD with a lot of singing.

He won't get out! (2010-01-09)

I think I loved this book even more than the little niece I bought it for. The story tells of a jovial king who decides (for reasons unknown) to stay in his bathtub all day. When the small and harried page cries for help, various members of the court try to lure the king out to fight, eat, fish, etc., only to be drawn into the bathroom themselves, and forced to do the proffered activity in the tub (while the poor page has to bring all the various paraphernalia and then clean up afterwards). Finally, when the whole court is sloshing around in the tub and crying for deliverance, the page decides he's had enough and pulls the plug. What really makes the book is the hilarious pictures (I especially loved the image of the queen stalking off dripping with her hoops awry and her skirts clinging wetly to her legs.)The copy I purchased also had a musical CD which was a lot cuter and better done than I'd expected.

Wonderful illustrations (2009-08-28)

Although some have complained about the quality of the rhymes, I found this book hilarious. The king won't get out of the bathtub, but unlike a rebellious child, you can't just hoist him out and say, "You're done!" After the Queen and countless courtiers try to lure the king out, it is the little page boy who finally solves the problem. Don Woods' lush paintings, reminiscent of Maxfield Parrish, do indeed show a goodly portion of the portly unclothed king.

Wonderful book (2009-08-20)

I and my son found this book at the library and fell in love with it. The story itself is funny and original and the wonderful drawings by Don Wood make it so unique. Unfortunately when we bought this book on line- the new edition was very badly printed and part of the magic of the illustrations was gone. The graphics were blurry and colors were messed up. I would recommend to look for the first edition of this book- it would make a huge difference.

First of Two-Parter (2008-01-28)

Another in the author's series of novels featuring Tony Valentine, who consults with casinos and law-enforcement about gambling scams and scammers.

In this tale, he and his son Gerry go to Las Vegas to discover how a blind poker player is scamming a poker tournament, which is being televised nationally by an ESPN-like cable sports network.

A few of the regular characters reappear, and there are two great new ones--a female reporter for the network, who Valentine develops a relationship with, and a 72-year-old grifter named Rufus, who among other "wagers" bets a mark that he can beat a horse and jockey in a 100-yard race.

There's a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor, with one chapter concluding with a plea to bring over a flamethrower. Wait for it.

Warning: at the end of the novel Valentine is halfway to the solution, but the sequel, "Deadman's Bluff," has been published. Some may object to this carving-up of a single tale, but really--the side stories are as interesting as the main plot, so I, for one, don't much mind.

Half a book (2007-07-23)

The writing is great and the build up to the end is great but there is no payoff. We have to buy the next book to figure out what is going to happen (I think). Frustrating and disappointing.

You gotta know when to fold 'em (2007-06-22)

Based on the first third of this book, I would give this 4 stars. The characters were interesting, and I was enjoying myself. Then the story really slowed down, with lots of side stuff. Then I figured out I would need to get the next book Deadman's Bluff to finish the story. So minus 1 star for taking a single 1 book story and splitting into 2 books to extort money. And clearly, it would have been 2 short books so filler was added. Another minus star for boring side stories; the Rufus scammer character is interesting in moderation, but after the fly, horserace, golf, ping pong, cat, x-ray vision, etc. scams, it was tiring. They didn't add anything, other than the mildly entertaining "how he tricked the Greek" variety. But they were too long as side stories, and it was ludicrous that the main character and his tacked-on "love" interest kept saying "there's no way he can do this" over and over again. Look, Rufus is a grifter, he will win not by playing by the rules. No reader was saying "yeah, there is no way" rather it was, "ok, what dumb trick will he use." So the dialog seemed contrived to try to make these side stories more dramatic. Didn't work. And in the end, the way that the tournament cheating was done, you probably will have figured out, and it isn't very "wow" to justify buying and reading 2 books. Even though my review sounds negative, I was impressed with the beginning of this book, and I assume that the rest of this book and the 2nd one were boring because the author (editor/publisher) were trying to stretch this out to sell twice as many books. If you just read this book and not the 2nd you really will be unhappy (1 star happy). However, given the good beginning of this book, I'm going to try Mr. Lucky and give this author 1 more chance. I think he is better than whomever told him to stretch this thin story to two volumes. The author seems to have a great sense of gambling, Atlantic City, and grifters. If these 2 books were 1, and tightened up by dropping a ton of Rufus stuff, this would be 4 stars!

Here comes a another one (2007-03-01)

I really like Swain. I really like Valentine. I even kinda like his kid. I'm not too sure about this novel. You see it's not finished. There's some strange, fatal method of winning at poker - maybe like what killed that Russian spy_ but after a lot of novel we do not yet know. Nor does Tony. I sure hope no one climbs up a rope and disappears in the follow up. You see, there is an old con man who makes and wins absurd bets with gamblers in Las Vegas. I suspect the chances of getting away with those bets would be about the same as not experiencing leg breaking ,cause they are on the order of "Betcha I can tell you where you got them shoes." So here we are anticipating a resolution to the surefire poker win and are only half the way there while being entertained with side shows. Maybe Swain needed some cash and had only half the novel done. After all, the carnie makes as much geeking as on the midway. I hope that's it cause now I am waiting for the follow up. Hooked I guess.Decide for yourself. Double or nothing. Watta bet!!!

Beware...#1 of a Two parter (2007-01-19)

The problem with some author's today is that they decide (or their publishers encourage them) to write a 2 part-er. Then, they do not let you knw this on the cover (probably so if you read the paperback, you can then buy the hardcover). The problem with these books is that the 2nd part usually spends a lot of time covering the same ground as the first book, and (as reviewers already state for book #2 - Deadman's bluff - you do not even need to read this one to appreciate that work!).

Otherwise this would get 4 stars. Swain's writing is much better, and his plot points no longer carry the huge unbelievable stretches of imagination (like actual mind reading monkeys) that his earlier works do. One good aspect of Swain's books is that the author allows us to enjoy Vegas while at the same time not hiding his personal distain for the gambling mecca.

I recommend this, as long as you know it is #1 of 2 and though side plot points will be solved, the main case will not until you read "bluff."

nothing new here (2010-01-12)

This is a long read with not much new information. If you have heard of spironolactone before and you have a good gynoecologist that understands the side effects of each pill, then this book will not be of much help to you. In addition, if you are post menopausal, the information for you is very limited in this book. Basically, Dr. Redmond (accurately) states that the patch is better than the pill when using birth control or HRT due to a more even delivery of the medication. That is hardly news in this day and age. Also, not sure why the spirituality section is included. It can be offensive to people who prefer to make thier own decisions in this area.

The only book you need! (2009-09-02)

As an electrologist I have been guiding women toward the hormonal solutions to their excessive hair growth (mostly facial) and distressing head hair loss, for over 26 years. Until Dr. Redmond's book, it was very difficult to find information by a REAL expert. This book should be read from front page to last page for a full understanding of who Dr. Redmond is, why he is qualified to help, and how to go about solving your specific problem. Any reviewer that says you cannot find your solution with the help of this book is simply wrong--they must not have actually read it! I offer this book to every client that comes through my door with a potential hormone problem (which is almost every client). I have read just about every hormone book that has been published (my clients bring them in). I have attended many seminars-heard many speakers.Some are ok, but none as thorough and fact/science based as Dr. Redmond. Read this book, and go to your physician to get the help you need and deserve!

Fantastic! (2009-04-27)

Here are your answers ladies. Get the book, most female problems, weight gain, loss, hair loss, adult acne, pre, peri, post- menapause, anything to do with period changes and more. He also sees patients in New York for $700 first visit, then will work with you over phone. For a last resort it is worth it, plus you can visit New York.

waste of money (2009-04-20)

This book had very little information in it. Dr. Redmond is supposed to be knowledgeable about hormones yet mentions little about using bio-identical hormones and doesn't seem to understand the function of progesterone. Don't waste your money or time on this one.

A MUST SEE for all women!! (2008-11-24)

I highly recommend this book for any woman who has suffered any hormonal problems whether they are in menopause or not. It helped me TREMENDOUSLY with hair loss, and my hair is growing again!! Furthermore, I gave this book to my sister who suffers from migraines and it has helped her too. I have recommended this book to at least 10 women who all loved it.

I will keep this book for the rest of my life. It is a fantastic reference tool.

The way to good health (2010-01-30)

This book is more than I imagined. I had done a cleansing fast in late 2005 with my Chiropractor at the time and she used the first edition of this book for that fast. I did not know at the time but I was showing signs of Lupus and had my hair falling out in gobs!! No one could tell me what was going on. After the fast I felt much better and had more energy and my hair stopped falling out for awhile. But, when the toxicity built up again I was in poor health again. Little did I know that some of my health problems where due to eating wheat. I no longer eat wheat and have less problems. Also, my Rheumatoid Arthritis is only active when I have sugar, especially table sugar (white sugar). I mostly use honey and real maple syrup nowdays. It's not worth having pain and inflammation. I have learned a lot more useful information and believe that nutritious food (mostly organic) and not chemicals and clean water are the best ways to good health. I really hope that more young people will start being concerned about their health as well as their babies and small children. Maybe some of our worst diseases including cancers can be irradicated without drugs. This is a MUST READ for anyone concerned about good health!!!!

Internal Cleansing (2006-01-15)

This is a none-scientific book. It is based on hocus pocus ideas. I threw it away as soon as I got it. I wouldn't even give it to my friends.

How essential for everyone! (2005-08-12)

Being the author of two books on cleansing and rejuvenating the body, The Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush, and Timeless Secrets of Health & Rejuvenation, I can only praise Linda's precious work and recommend it to anyone interest in improving his health. Without cleansing the organs and systems of the body we stand little chance of being healthy or restoring our health in this pollution-ridden world. These types of books are what the population now needs to overcome the current impasse that stifles our health care system and makes this a very sick country. Taking responsibilty for our own health is the only real way out of the current crisis that afflicts so many. Reading this book is an eye-opener and will serve you well on your path to good and lasting health.

Informative and knowledgable information (2005-07-28)

A lot of good information for only one book, you will learn alot about fasting and how your colon and stomach work. A good read for the first timer or people really into health. If you're interested in cleansing yourself or just learning the benefits of why you should, this is it. I would really recomend this book.

ISBN: 1890694401

In recent years, the conventional recommendation for women entering menopause or experiencing hormonal fluctuations has been synthetic hormone treatment with Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) or birth control pills, depending on a woman’s stage of life, according to Dr. Lucille. But the messages from the medical establishment and the media have been confusing and often conflicting, and women are now asking questions and seeking alternative solutions to managing their hormones, from puberty to perimenopause, menopause and beyond.

Dr. Lucille’s book answers many questions, including:
• What are hormones? A guide to the endocrine system, life cycles and recognizing your body’s signals when something is wrong
• What are the underlying causes of hormone imbalance? Understanding estrogen – beneficial estrogens, the dangers of estrogen dominance and supplements that can help hormone balance
• What is the stress connection? Stress and the connection to your hormones, adrenal glands, metabolism and thyroid
• What are some natural ways to obtain relief? An in-depth look at natural remedies for hot flashes and night sweats, energy, sleep and reduced libido
• How do I get the most out of my doctor visit? Tips on collecting your health history, researching possible health risks and becoming your own advocate

Creating and Maintaining Balance: A Woman's Guide to Safe Natural Hormone Health (2009-06-12)

Very good book gives lots of insight on what to do about homonal inbalance. I haven't read it all yet but like what I've read so far.
Book was in great condition and shipping was fast.

Hormones (2004-09-23)

Everyone has a different answer and this doctor consults for a supplement company therefore recommending their products only. Would have been better if she would give generic names of what to take and not a specific company but I'm sure she cleans up this way.

Holly Lucille knows her stuff! (2004-05-02)

This is the first book I have read on women's hormonal issues that I can understand and makes sense. I have been pracitisng many of Dr Lucille's guidleines and feel so much better. I love how she integrates holistic and traditional medicine as both are necessary.

NICE WORK! (2004-03-29)

This is by far the best work I have seen regarding this whole issue of hormones! It makes sense and it is very reader freindly. Every women needs to have a copy!

Very helpful book (2010-02-26)

This book was a quick read with lots of helpful tips about how to reduce the symptoms of PMS. The author keeps the subject light by interjecting humor throughout the book but at the same time treats the sometimes emotionally painful issues (yelling at a loved one) with care. This book, I think, has changed my life dramatically. If I ever met the author I would give her a big hug!

Easy-to-read and understand (2008-10-26)

The SOS for PMS is an easy-to-read pick-me-up resource handbook that doesn't just offer quick fixes to PMS but also lasting results. It is not one of those manuals and educational references that bores you to death with endless physiological-medical details and unfathomable terms you can't even spell out. On the contrary, the book focuses on the emotional awareness and management side so that women are able to accept, understand and act on their PMS accordingly.

The book shares a clear and brutally honest portrayal of what's really happening (and why it's happening) when a woman is under the influence of the tyrant PMS. The story installment at the beginning of each chapter makes it easy for readers to relate to the topic currently being discussed. Aside from practical strategies (which are also helpful not just during PMS reign), it also provides hope & encouragement from other women (who've been through the PMS misery) and helpful advice from experts in the field. There were also useful tools and information like nutrition do's and dont's, sleep deprivation, herbal supplements, etc. stated that you can use to maintain your health and your family's well-being.

I think one of the things that sets this book apart from the others is the chapter about "PMS and Faith". I don't think there's a PMS-related book in the market today that tackles faith-related issues while being logical.

On a last note, while PMS may not be ultimately "curable", it is manageable. Geoffrey Redmond, M.D., emphasizes that the problem is not the hormones themselves but how a woman's body reacts to them. So, it's really up to the woman to manage her symptoms if she wants a pain-free pre-menstrual period.

REMARKS:

I wish the author had inserted a little bit of humor in the book. It's a serious subject and women who have low attention span (or men who may be interested in reading the book) may not be able to endure the 186 pages. But overall, the book is not only reader-friendly and insightful but also uplifting and helpful. It is still highly recommended!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
9 NUGGETS OF WISDOM FROM "SOS for PMS":
** Silence is the enemy of healing.
** When you say yes to life, you automatically say no to something else. That's why it's important to know the price of your yes.
** It's one thing to understand why questionable behavior is occuring. It's another to do something about it.
** There's a direct connection between what you eat & drink and how you feel.
** Eating about 3-4 hours in small amounts can regulate blood sugar more rapidly than eating in traditional "3 squares" and can help avoid a rapid drop in sugar level thus preventing meltdowns that might occur if too much time elapsed between snacks and meals.
** Experts recommend 4 ounces of water every hour you are awake. If you wait to drink until you're thirsty, your body's fluids are already depleted.
** Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the brain that has an enormous influence over many brain functions. The functions of serotonin are numerous and appear to involve control of appetite, sleep, mood, behavior (including sexual behavior) and depression. When serotonin is at an ideal level, you feel mellow and relaxed, hopeful and optimistic. You have a sense of being at peace with life. Low serotonin levels can result in feeling depressed, having a short attention span, feeling "blocked" or scattered, acting impulsively, feeling suicidal, and craving sweets and simple carbohydrates to quickly increase the serotonin level.
** Sleep, sunlight, sex and exercise increase serotonin while caffeine, alcohol and stress lower serotonin.
** Thirty minutes of aerobic exercise is approximately equivalent to 20 mg of Prozac. That's how powerful exercise is!
"Taking control of PMS..." (2008-10-11)
"Taking control of PMS..."
I remember well those days when I felt irritable, bloated, headachy, and out of sorts. I did not know why I felt that way until I started a journal. That was when I saw the monthly cycle.
Author Mary Byers brings knowledge and wisdom to this topic. She has thoroughly researched PMS. In The S.O.S. for PMS, the topic is discussed from the perspective of motherhood. It is difficult to deal with the stress of a spouse, children, and PMS, all at once.
Byers includes a list of both physical and behavioral symptoms. I was particularly impressed with the suggestions for coping or lessening PMS. Byers includes making good choices such as nutrition, avoiding caffeine, and exercise. She always discusses medication and faith. The S.O.S. for PMS is easy to read and understand. Where was this book 30 years ago when I needed it!? I recommend this book for all women. It will bless them and their families.
Essential guide for dealing with PMS (2008-09-26)
SOS for PMS by Mary M. Byers is an eye-opening, honest look at how premenstrual syndrome effects women and their families. Byers bravely tells about her own struggle with PMS that included depression, fatigue, and blow ups with her husband and children, some so extreme they verged on abuse. She uses a fictional woman named Callie at the beginning of each chapter who goes through her own battle and then takes Byers' recommendations and finds relief. The big three factors that can effect PMS are nutrition, stress, and exercise, and Byers includes ways to deal with all three to lessen the effects of PMS. From cutting back on caffeine to taking a walk and asking your husband to bring supper home to cut back on stress, the book is full of terrific ways to cope. Byers stresses that this is a problem with no quick solution. It takes planning and long term goals. Making a chart with not only physical symptoms, but mental as well help determine when what Byers refers to as "Black Tuesday" is coming. She has advice for husbands, including a letter from her husband with his own coping techniques. Byers promises that there is hope. It might come in the form of medications, exercise, or a combination of all her ideas, but there is hope that women don't have to suffer every month.
Great Book! (2008-09-17)
Author Mary Byers has her finger on the pulse of mothers across America. She seems to be able to pinpoint the areas where women need the most help and encouragement. Her latest book, S.O.S. for PMS surely hits the mark. In this book she not only describes symptoms of Post Menstrual Syndrome, but offers help need to not only cope, but thrive during your monthly cycle. I wish a book like this had been written years ago!
I highly recommend S.O.S. for P.M.S. for women of all ages, but especially for younger women so they can get a jump on strategies to employ early on.
