Very inspirational and insightful! (2010-05-17)

I HIGHLY recommend this book. I read "Inconceivable", also by Julia Indichova, and this is a great companion piece.

A Life-affirming treasure (2009-09-08)

This book is a beautiful and wonderful life-affirming resource to any woman wanting to conceive and having difficulty. I am not infertile, but am an older wanna be mom. Just like many women who are either older or infertile, I've had to deal with the very harmful way our culture can treat moms and moms-to-be. The popular culture tends to value youth far more than wisdom and truth. What's more is that there is so much judgement out there regarding women and their reproductive choices - whether it's pro-choice or so-called "pro-life." But Julia does not get into the politics of this - that's just my observation.

What this book does is show you how to get in touch with that beautiful, god-given (my words)desire to create life. It is not just a "feel good" book - there are concrete tips as well as many case stories of women who have come to her workshops and what they have discovered on their way to becoming parents. She also shares her own experiences as well. If you are serious about your journey, you will also confront whatever pain you've experienced that could be getting in the way. You will have more insight into what it is you want and why you want it. What I love about it is how beautifully she validates the absolutely profound desire to create life and how unique and magnificent this is. Our culture wants to tell women how to live their lives and use their bodies and too often we end up looking to others to give us the answer. Julia teaches you how to stop looking outside yourself to create what you want. Look within and to your God (or whatever your higher power is) to guide you in creating the life you want.

Also - there are recipes and nutritional guidance that I would not purport to be "expert" but are very common-sense good suggestions. I have changed the way I eat and relate to food and my body as a result and can't say enough about how healthy that is.

There is a reason why you want to create life and have a baby - don't minimize that and don't give your power away to doctors/husbands/medical books, or whatever. Listen to the voice of that baby that wants to come out and ignore all the others!

A Ray of Hope (2009-07-19)

I purchased the book a few weeks ago and could not put it down until I read the entire thing. The positive messages throughout the book are inspiring. Julia gives you hope when it seems like no one else is able to. To those of us who have gone through or are currently going through a difficult time trying to conceive a child, this book is a blessing.

My baby is due tomorrow! All of my gratitude to you, Julia! (2009-05-04)

Julia,
Add me to the list of women that conceived after listening to your wonderful CD, and reading your inspiring book. After a miscarriage two years ago and 10 years of trying, my healthy baby boy is due tomorrow!!! There is no question that your words helped me open my heart and mind to receive this baby. Thank you so much!

With love and gratitude,
-Taryn

The Fastest Review (2009-04-11)

This book was just as the seller described it. There was nothing wrong with the book when I received it and that was great. I picked regular ground shipping and I received the product well before the expected arrival time.

Great book (2007-12-07)

This is a wonderful book for those trying to conceive. I checked it out of the library twice. Lots of good advice about timing, the science of conception, health tips, fertility problems, pregnancy tests, ovulation tests, and the basics. Answered a ton of questions that I had. Yeah, people know how to have sex to get pregnant, but this book helps you optimize the best times to have sex.

Very Helpful (2007-11-16)

I found this book to be extremely informative and helpful. After reading through it, and following the instructions recommeneded I conceived within 2 months. I originally checked this book out at the library, and I found it to be so helpful that I bought it. If you have questions/ concerns about being able to conceive, and wanting to get pregnant quickly, I would highly recommend this book.

Not worth it (2007-06-20)

I checked out this book from the library to see if it was worth buying. I'm so glad I did not waste my money. This was the most basic information that I'm sure kids in grade school get in their Sex Ed classes. It was all pretty much common sense and I did not learn anything new.

Very Helpful (2006-12-27)

This book gives some great common-sense tips on getting pregnant.
Sure, we all know how its done and we've heard our share of old wives tales, but this is sound, practical advice from a fertility doctor on how to increase your chances of getting pregnant in the shortest amount of time (without fertility drugs). I had no idea that caffeine could affect a woman's fertility, even in moderate amounts! Also, he advises on common sense health information and how to best be prepared to carry a healthy pregnancy. I wouldn't call it required reading, but very informative and I am one of those people that likes to reseach things thoroughly before taking them on.

ALL the things you can do to boost your odds. (2003-04-22)

My husband and I are just beginning to explore the reasons we're having trouble conceiving, and before going to our doctors, I wanted to make sure that we were giving ourselves the best possible odds. This book is great at summarizing the many things affecting fertility that are in our control right now, and since reading this book, we've changed our diet, started taking supplements and herbs, and begun acupuncture. But the book also covers traditional medical treatments; it just doesn't assume that they're a first step. The book is pretty short, which is good, but I would have liked more detail about particular herbs. Also, it's written with British terms, which is only a problem if you don't know that linseed oil and flax seed oil are the same thing (I spent a lot of time looking for "linseed oil," which is the British name). There are also some suggestions that we're not up to ("don't store food in plastic"; "eat only organic food"), but that's our fault, not the book's.

I highly recommend it!

How to Have a Girl (2010-04-26)

I don't now what all the complaining is about, especially from reviewers who didn't even bother to try it. I chose this book 10 years ago because it appeared to be the simplest and smallest book. I didn't want a bunch of heavy reading-- I just wanted to get busy and have a baby! ~ : )

I followed what the books said and had a girl. I did not find the book difficult to follow at all, and we only had to try once!

This is no surprise because the techniques also increase your chances of concieving by keeping track of when you are ovulating.

I wanted to increase the odds of having a big sister for my subsequent children, so we started trying for a girl. My resulting 10 year old daughter is the most wonderful big sister any little brother (age 6 now) could have. : )

Where's his proof? (2006-10-21)

Not once in his book does he tell ONE success story. He writes about several couples who were in the TRYING stages, but didn't share whether they ended up having a boy or a girl. I'm not sure how much stock I would put into this method... but I've not used it personally, so I guess I don't have a personal testimonial one way or the other.

Too Much to Read and Too Long! (2004-05-09)

This book was too much to read and too long! For pete sake, we are trying to have a baby, not build a computer. I want a baby girl bad but after several tries of this book that didn't work, I'm going to find an easier way. Amazon, send my money back!

Worked like a charm! (2002-12-13)

I disagree with the other reviewers. I used this book and followed all of the instructions (no small task!) and had a girl. Maybe it was just luck, but I recommend the book to everyone. The problem is that planning a girl takes a lot of effort - charting, temperature-taking, etc. - but I found the book clear and very easy to use.

Nothing really works (2002-01-31)

OK It wasn't clear. I won't use this. But a word to all other readers -- I've used Shettles twice and it doesn't work! (I have 3 boys).

Only buy if you haven't started trying yet (2010-01-28)

This book will probably be helpful for couples who haven't tried to conceive yet and are thinking about starting. Do NOT buy it if you are already trying and struggling with infertility. Most likely, if you have already been trying for a while, you will already know all of the information given in the book.

Good book, but not the best (2008-10-01)

I am in the process of trying to get pregnant for the first time and have been told by doctors that it will be difficult. While this book had a lot of useful information, I find I prefer the book Plan to Get Pregnant better.

Getting Pregnant Naturally: Healthy Choices To Boost Your Chances Of Conceiving Without Fertility Drugs

Author: Winifred Conkling
Publisher: Harper Paperbacks
Publication date: 1999-02-01
ISBN: 0380796333
Pages: 224
Rating:
Price: $13.99

Before turning to high-tech fertility treatments, the 15 percent of all couples who experience fertility problems might consider reading and trying the many conception tips in Winifred Conkling's highly helpful Getting Pregnant Naturally: Healthy Choices to Boost Your Chances of Conceiving Without Fertility Drugs. Conkling, an experienced medical and natural health writer and mother of two children (one who took a long time to conceive), differentiates between "infertile" and "subfertile" couples, and asserts that more than half of all couples who have failed to conceive in a year or more of trying can go on to get pregnant and have healthy babies. Her book describes how.

Conkling begins with a clear description of the complicated mechanics of conception and the basics of enhancing conception chances. Combining accessible and straightforward information with simple checklists, she then presents dietary suggestions (men should avoid cottonseed oil, a natural antifertility agent), herbal remedies, homeopathy, acupressure (complete with pressure-point maps), and stress-reduction techniques (including enjoying good orgasms, biofeedback, meditation, visualization, massage, and refraining from adopting a child as a means to reduce infertility stress). For each suggestion and remedy, a complete, easy-to-follow description is provided. Getting Pregnant Naturally concludes with lifestyle suggestions such as losing weight gradually (if needed) and avoiding bicycling (for men), as well as quitting smoking and recreational drugs, minimizing air travel, and limiting computer use (there may be a link between computer use and miscarriage). A 27-page appendix listing resources rounds out this highly helpful guide. --Ericka Lutz

Some Holistic Advice, Some Terrible Advice (2008-12-25)

This book is all over the map. From the use of herbs, and natural family planing which will surely help getting pregnant, to strange advice of getting a vaccine.

I think some advice in here is wonderful for helping a couple get pregnant, like eating organ meats and egg yolks for vitamin A. But on the next page, she encourages eating soy foods, which contain known disrupting chemicals that will through the body out of balance.

Review is by Ramiel Nagel author of Healing Our Children: Because Your New Baby Matters! Sacred Wisdom for Preconception, Pregnancy, Birth and Parenting (ages 0-6) & Cure Tooth Decay: Heal and Prevent Cavities with Nutrition (First Edition)

long delivery time (2008-04-05)

this product took forever to arrive... over the 21 business days... when i placed a 2 star review i was sent an email asking me to remove my opinions. now that the book has actually arrived i am redoing my review with more stars. the book was in great condition and had no tears, stains, folds, or markings. if you have a month to wait around on it to be delivered i would recommend buying from this user.

Good NFP info when healthy people are trying to conceive (2001-10-22)

This book does a good job of explaining how to use the methods of natural family planning (NFP) with the goal of conceiving. I had taken a NFP course before I was married to learn how to prevent conception, and this book took that knowledge and helped me learn how to apply it to trying to conceive.

I would agree with other comments that it is not for those who are having great difficulty conceiving and are facing infertility issues.

I was not looking for information about herbs or alternative therapies, so I cannot comment on those sections of the book.

This is great for those wanting details about the physiology of conception.

I don't recomend this book (2001-10-17)

This book is OK for someone who doesn't know her menstual cycle, has never monitored BBT or cervical mucus, has never tried ovulation predictor kit... I mean, WHO HAS NOT STARTED TRYING YET. Otherwise, you won't find anything new here.

This book introduce many herbs to boost your fertility.
But NATURAL doesn't mean harmless.
Each herb is explained like "estrogen promoting" "Progesteron promoting" but it doesn't tell you WHEN of your cycle you should take it.
Don't guinea-pig your fertility.

Some good info, some outdated info (2001-04-02)

Let me begin by saying that the first book anyone should read if they are trying to conceive is Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Wechsler. This book has some good information and recommendations. I tried to conceive for 2 years. I began taking evening primrose oil daily after reading this book. About 6 months later, I discovered the website tryingtoconceive.com and learned that evening primrose oil should only be taken prior to ovulation because it can cause uterine contractions and interfere with the implantation of an egg. After discontinuing the EPO from ovulation to menstruation, I conceived within 3 months. So, I guess you could say, had I NOT read this book, I may have been pregnant sooner.

Book (2009-07-12)

Did not ever read this book but it came in quickly and in great condition. I did have a boy after I purchased the book so maybe just good luck.

Phooey (2004-04-24)

Do you really need a son that bad you would have to "Scientifically Maximize Your Chances"?

Scientific Data Weak. (1999-03-17)

As an engineer, I have to say I found the scientific data offered in this book to be very weak. I recommend Dr. Shettles book over this one. You will notice if you read both, that the advice is almost the complete opposite from each other. I ended up using Shettles and got the boy and later the girl I wanted.

it's a waste of money (1997-08-04)

Dr. Young based his recommendations on a few empirical studies done in the 80s which are not described in particular details and offered no scientific explanation of the results of those studies. (I would not consider my money totally wasted if he did so). He advocates intercourse at 6 days before ovulation to get a boy whilst most (if not all) studies suggest that a sperm cannot live that long. Good luck to those who follows his instructions

Crib Notes

Author: Kelly Perotti
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
Publication date: 2008-12-19
ISBN: 1436387485
Pages: 108
Rating:
Price: $15.99

Am I ready to be a mom (and will I be good at it)?
How do I make that happen (Sex Ed. was so long ago)?
When does morning sickness end (and why does it last all day)?
Why is everyone touching my belly (and how do I make them stop)?
Are contractions supposed to hurt this bad (or am I being a sissy)?
Is this kid supposed to eat so often (and will my shirts ever button again)?
Where is the old me (and do I even want her back)?

The frank humor and refreshing honesty with which Crib Notes approaches conception, pregnancy, and parenthood will not only provide a welcome distraction from all those questions in your pretty little head, but will offer some explanations along the way as well.

True Confessions of real moms at various stages of motherhood, and a mini Daddy Dictionary are added bonus features!

Fun and Informative (2009-07-18)

You read so many books before and during your pregnancy and after reading this one, you will have all of your questions answered and you feel well prepared. I will be giving this book as a gift at every baby shower that I go to. Also, this is one book you will be able to get your partner to read.

Thinking About Becoming A Mother? This Book Was Written For You (2009-06-20)

Crib Notes, a candid look at conception, pregnancy and parenthood, is a terrific manual for any pregnant mom, new mom, or frankly, any woman thinking about becoming a mom. Kelly Perotti writes about all subjects pregnant and new motherhood from her experience and research, in a lighthearted, honest, and most generously non-judgmental way. The result gives women a darned clear picture of what pregnancy and new motherhood is all about, alleviating the fear of the unknown and offering suggestions that may make the ride a bit easier.

I am all about honesty and help for new moms, no judgment and humor, so I practically devoured the book. Perotti's fast facts were especially entertaining. For example, did you know that "there is a higher chance for conception if the woman has an orgasm" p.15 Woo-Hoo! or that some pregnant women have a "craving for dirt or metal signaling an iron deficiency?" p.27 In addition to these interesting tidbits, the real-life examples and advice are the book's strong point. Perotti's chapter entitled "Baby Blues and Lasagna" was particularly good on this front, my favorite chapter of the book.

DMM (2009-05-14)

As a mom of six young children, this book is awesome. This book is really straight forward and down to earth. It is very educational, and humerous at the same time. Kelly really explores the many aspects of pregnancy and delivery, you don't realize just how many decisions you end up making throughout the whole process, Kelly hits on just about all of them without adding too much of her own prefrences.
If your looking for an educational, "tell it like it is" kind of book you have found it.

More fun than a barrel of monkeys! (2009-04-07)

If you're looking for a tongue in cheek master piece than look no further. This is the book you've been waiting for! Kelly Perotti, you've out done yourself once again.

Fun to read, great gift idea (2009-04-07)

Not since that other "friend-to-friend" book on a related topic, have I had so much fun reading about pregnancy and motherhood. This book is candid, fun, informative and entertaining wrapped up in one easy-to-read package. It is my new MUST PURCHASE for anyone I know who is expecting. Would also be a great gift idea for new moms, mother's day etc.

Conceiving Risk, Bearing Responsibility: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the Diagnosis of Moral Disorder

Author: Elizabeth M. Armstrong
Publisher: The Johns Hopkins University Press
Publication date: 2008-06-25
ISBN: 0801891086
Pages: 296
Rating:
Price: $25.00

In American society, the consumption of alcohol during pregnancy is considered dangerous, irresponsible, and in some cases illegal. Pregnant women who have even a single drink routinely face openly voiced reproach. Yet fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in infants and children is notoriously difficult to diagnose, and the relationship between alcohol and adverse birth outcomes is riddled with puzzles and paradoxes.

Sociologist Elizabeth M. Armstrong uses fetal alcohol syndrome and the problem of drinking during pregnancy to examine the assumed relationship between somatic and social disorder, the ways in which social problems are individualized, and the intertwining of health and morality that characterizes American society. She traces the evolution of medical knowledge about the effects of alcohol on fetal development, from nineteenth-century debates about drinking and heredity to the modern diagnosis of FAS and its kindred syndromes. She argues that issues of race, class, and gender have influenced medical findings about alcohol and reproduction and that these findings have always reflected broader social and moral preoccupations and, in particular, concerns about women's roles and place in society, as well as the fitness of future generations. Medical beliefs about drinking during pregnancy have often ignored the poverty, chaos, and insufficiency of some women's lives -- factors that may be more responsible than alcohol for adverse outcomes in babies and children.

Using primary sources and interviews to explore relationships between doctors and patients and women and their unborn children, Armstrong offers a provocative and detailed analysis of how drinking during pregnancy came to be considered a pervasive social problem, despite the uncertainties surrounding the epidemiology and etiology of fetal alcohol syndrome.

changes the way you see the world (2008-05-05)

This book will completely change not only how you think of FAS, but how you think of the entire medical professional and how you think about "risk."

It is amazingly well researched. Armstrong had to do a lot of legwork to compile all these studies on FAS and FAE, as well as delve into historical research to find out drinking patterns before FAS was "discovered." Her writing style is very clear and accessible.

After reading this book, I could not stop talking about it and recommending it to everyone I know.

Outstanding (2007-08-26)

Armstrong examines how FAS developed through medical practitioners' attempts to diagnose moral order, building upon previous literature in the medical sociology field.

Ohhhh Pleeease---FAS??? Prove it!!!! hahahahahaha (2006-07-11)

I have two beautiful children and a hard working husband. I live in Paradise. Where every day is a vacation. So what if my kids are a little differnt from everybody else????? ADD ODD ADHD,FAS FAE,it is all a crock.I drank and smoked the whole time I was pregnant with both my kids, and used the whole time I was pergnant with my first kid. How a child acts has nothing to do with what I did or didn't do!!!! Kids will be kids, and a good parent knows their own childs limitations. This book is a total waste of time and I don't know why my family wanted me to read it. I didn't get past page two. This book is only for complete losers!!!!! So what if the facts line up and my kids really do have FAS like my husband says, they'll never prove it.
